Highway Robbery

Highway Robbery By Kate Thompson Reviewed by Lisa Doyle-Redmond Highway Robbery is Kate Thompson's first book for younger readers. Her previous books which have won numerous prizes and awards have been aimed at children aged nine and above. Highway Robbery is beautifully presented with a black velvet hardback cover and lively illustrations throughout. The book introduces a wonderful young narrator, a street urchin, who tells vividly of his cold and hunger and of the street characters he meets. Most importantly he narrates the tale of the fine tall rider on the great black horse who asks him to look after the horse until his return in exchange for a golden guinea. Could the tall, dark and frightening looking rider be the notorious Dick Turpin? Could the fine big horse which our young narrator cares for be the famous and magnificent Black Bess? Read this attractive and enchanting book and find out. Perfect for confident readers aged 6+ 5 stars *****
