The Wind-up Bird Chronicle
I have just finished this book by Haruki Murakami. I have read 2 of his other books and enjoyed them immensely. It is set in contemporary Tokyo and tracks the life of a seemingly average Japanese man. Like with his other books Murakami's style is almost dreamlike. His characters philosophize as they deal with life. Strange and complex characters are introduced and move the story along to a literary crescendo. As Westerners we are used to having a certain writing style thrust at us, with Murakami, all the rules are torn down and we have to adjust to his style, which is a bit like learning to breathe differently. This book is wonderful and thought provoking. It is a testament to Murakami's growing popularity all over the world.
