Welcome to the Drogheda North Study Centre

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child, developing their ability and nurturing their independence.

The Kumon Drogheda North Study Centre runs from The Barbican Centre (St. Peter’s Parish), in the heart of Drogheda adjacent to the Laurence Town Shopping Centre.

Students of all ages and abilities attend the centre, with current students ranging from preschool through to leaving certificate age.

For children who are struggling Kumon identifies and addresses the gaps in their learning, and for children who have a good grounding in the subjects it supports their further development.

Following an initial assessment, students begin their study at a comfortable starting point and gradually move through the programmes as they master each new topic, all the while developing in confidence and in their ability to self-learn.

Kumon not only supports a child's academic skills but also builds upon their softer study skills such as concentration, focus, motivation, perseverance, and other skills necessary for them to achieve their full potential.

In addition to studying an appropriate amount of work at home on a daily basis, your child can also attend the study centre up to twice a week, usually for about 30 mins per subject. Students are observed in class and their progress carefully recorded so they continue on progressing at a steady, just-right pace.

Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider as, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work.

English, Maths

Class Times:
Wednesday: 3pm - 5.30pm

Our Methods:

The Kumon Method and its strengths

At Kumon we are dedicated to fully pursuing the potential of each individual student. Kumon Instructors provide just enough guidance for their students to be able to do the exercises on their own. As a result, our students learn that they can do anything if they try, build self-esteem, and develop the ability to take on new challenges for themselves.

Kumon aims to foster sound, capable individuals who are able to independently carve out a path for themselves in life.

At Kumon we believe that the most beneficial thing we can do for children is to furnish them with the ability to advance to high school level material through self-learning as early as possible in life.

With the Kumon Method, students study independently from an early age and develop both a high level of academic ability and the ability to learn independently. We aim to equip children who study with Kumon the ability to face challenges head on, both at school and beyond. All in all, the skills that students gain through doing Kumon go a long way to helping them to achieve their goals and dreams.

The Kumon Method was born from a parent’s love for his child:
When first developing the Kumon Method, its founder, Toru Kumon theorised that as long as his son was able to do maths easily in high school, he would have plenty of time to spend on whatever other pursuits he was interested in. So he thought about what he could do at home to help his son gain proficiency in high school maths.

With the aim of helping his son gain independence, Toru Kumon prepared his own learning materials and study method. He wrote out calculation problems on loose-leaf worksheets and combined them with a self-study method that would enable his son to advance by himself.

In effect what Toru Kumon did was to create the prototype for Kumon Method of Learning. He had laid the foundation for Kumon’s individualised approach that enables each student to learn in accordance with his or her academic ability, and for Kumon’s pursuit of potential; both of which we continue to place the utmost importance on.

With the Kumon Method students begin study from an easy starting point that is suitable for each student’s level of ability, without taking their age or school year into consideration.

With the Kumon Method students learn by doing the worksheets independently without being taught
Letting students begin study from a point they can do easily, without making judgments based on age or school year, enables them to experience the joy of learning. For example, when they are studying comfortably students can do the work by themselves, they can get a 100 percent score, they enjoy their study, and they can advance to the next worksheets without difficulty. So the easy starting point is essential for creating a solid foundation for study, with which students can independently develop their academic ability.

At Kumon, we enable students to develop advanced academic and self-learning ability by ensuring they are always studying at a level that is just right for them.

So what is the “just-right” level of study? It is the optimum level for each student to develop academic and self-learning ability. It can be a comfortable level or a challenging one, depending on what is best for each student at different stages in their Kumon studies. What remains constant, however, is that it must always be a level at which students can repeatedly experience a sense of accomplishment and progress on their own without being taught. Keeping this in mind, Kumon Instructors continuously monitor, guide and challenge students to grow by gradually increasing the level of difficulty of the worksheets they assign, while taking into account increases in each student’s level of academic ability.

When studying at the just-right level, students are provided with a suitable amount of mental stimulus, just as they would have to attempt appropriate physical tasks in order to build a strong body. Through continued study at this level students gain self-confidence and an understanding that they can do something if they give it try, which enables them to build up a high level of academic ability.

The Kumon Method aims for students to go beyond their school grade level through self-learning and advance to studying high school level material at an early age.

When studying at the just-right level students think for themselves and complete the exercises. When they get stuck they look at the hints and examples incorporated in the worksheets and figure out themselves how to do the exercises. In this way, continued study at the just-right level fosters the ability to learn on their own or self-learn.

Students then use that self-learning ability to advance independently beyond their school grade level to advanced levels and more difficult exercises.

To sum up, the Kumon Method is a learning method that pursues the potential of each individual student and develops his or her ability to the maximum.

We at Kumon believe in the vast potential of our students and want to further develop each student’s ability. Born out of the bond between a parent and child, the Kumon Method of learning faithfully carries on the thinking and ideas of its founder Toru Kumon. At the same time, we constantly strive for something better by continuing to develop our worksheets and instruction method. And today, this learning method continues to go beyond the borders of countries, race, culture and traditions, to reach more and more countries and regions throughout the world.

Kumon is an individualised learning method that allows each student to study at a comfortable level, regardless of age or school grade, and advance beyond his or her current school grade level. At Kumon, students become enthusiastic for learning and experience a sense of accomplishment as they increase their academic ability and develop their potential to the maximum.

How will Kumon help my child with their schoolwork?

As the beginning of the new school year approaches you are probably feeling as daunted as your child about what the new year will bring and how you can best support them.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world.
The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. To achieve this, Kumon study takes students beyond the level they are studying at school and provides learning materials which are unfamiliar to compel them to develop new learning strategies to deal effectively with new challenges.

These independent learning skills, once developed, then enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. We believe each Kumon student has the potential to study advanced work, beyond the international standard for their age, empowering them to get the best out of school and succeed in the global community.

Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – again ensuring that the material each one encounters extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability. This kind of individual differentiation is a unique benefit of the programme and makes it an effective complement to the school curriculum. Through completion of advanced work, children can really begin to realise their unlimited potential.

At Kumon, learning is always for the long run: our programmes prepare students for success both at school and beyond.

Getting ready for the new school year

The summer holidays have been a great time for children to relax and have fun, however tomorrow is 1 September, meaning the start of the new school year is fast approaching. Whether your child is returning to school or starting for the first time, here’s a few tips to help prepare them for the new school year.

School shopping
If you haven’t yet purchased your child’s school equipment, make this experience fun and exciting by doing it together. Knowing they have all their equipment and kit ready will help them feel comforted and well-prepared for, and during, their first week back.

School work
Boost your child’s confidence before the new school year by encouraging them to look over their previous work. This recap will not only get their minds back into a regular learning habit, but will provide useful foundations to get their new learning off to a great start. You could even get involved by turning this revision into a fun memory game.

The syllabus for most GCSE and A level subject courses is available to read online, offering older students a useful opportunity to become familiar with their course content before they begin studying it. This will help older students know what they can expect, and what they’ll be working towards over the course of the year. To continue with their preparations, you can set goals with your child on what they would like to achieve within their first school term, and beyond. Write down and display these goals within your home, making them bold and colourful so they’ll be reinforced.

For even younger students who are starting school after this first term, you could plan ahead and prepare them for this big transition by introducing some routine and regular learning to their days, through Kumon study. Kumon’s fun, colourful worksheets support younger students as they develop their pencil control and motor skills, as well as their knowledge of letters and numbers in advance of their first steps into primary school.

School routine
Preparation is key. Reintroducing your child’s usual weekday bed time will encourage their sleeping pattern to return to normal ahead of their first day back. This is important to ensure they’ll be refreshed and alert, ready to absorb new learning straight away. For younger children, why not begin to adjust their eating times at home so they co-ordinate with their eating times at school. This will help your child to not feel hungry at different times of the day and settle into a regular routine.

If your child’s school has extracurricular activities, consider where their interests and hobbies lie, and talk together about possible activities and clubs they’d like to join this year. These activities are fun and will help to develop their skills and abilities outside of the classroom.

Your child may be feeling a little nervous as the new school year approaches, so try to reassure them and get them feeling positive. Find out what your child is looking forward to on their first day of school or in the new school year. Remind them that they can always speak to you about their thoughts and feelings, and ask their teacher for help.

Through preparation and communication, you can help get your child into the right frame of mind to begin a productive and prosperous school year!

Well done to Angeline Pechon (English), Johan Uthup (English & Maths) and Declan McEntee (English & Maths) who were awarded with their Kumon ASHR certificates today. This award is given to students studying one year above the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of school grade level).
