I figured, as I couldn't breathe properly, I would be seen pretty quickly but because of all the drunks who got injured over the weekend from being idiotically drunk, the A&E department was severely backed up and I had to wait for 5 hours, in a freezing cold A&E department with a respiratory bag to help me breathe before I got to see a doctor.
There was a girl beside me who was in possible early labour at 26 weeks and she had to wait 4 hours to be seen. She was sitting in a hard backed chair in pain and my heart just went out to her. They didn't even have a spare blanket to give her, she had her boyfriends coat on her.
There were elderly people who were sitting in wheelchairs, in considerable pain and they had to wait hours too.
The triage nurse was so apologetic, he was coming out to us and giving us drinks of water and painkillers and apologising for the delay and he explained it was because of the carnage of the bank holiday weekend. Its no wonder we have a reputation for being drunks all over the world, after seeing the state of some of the people in hospital yesterday, it makes me never want to drink again.
There were 2 members of one family clogging up 2 beds after they'd gotten drunk and beat the bejaysus out of each other on Sunday.
So often we slag off our health system (and with valid reason mostly) but yesterday I felt sorry for the staff. And this was Monday - so I don't even want to imagine what it was like Saturday and Sunday.
I was there 10 hours and thankfully, allowed home after a hefty dose of steroids and a stint on a Nebulizer.
So glad not to have been admitted, it was carnage in there yesterday. Seeing an A&E department after a bank holiday weekend is harrowing.
