Spinal MRI under General Anaesthetic

Got a phone call from hospital they have had a cancellation for Tuesday (The nurse said usually there is a 13 month waiting list) so Hailey is going in for spinal MRI on Tuesday, we have to be in for 7.30am, of course it will be great to get it over and done with and find out if the Sacral Dimple is causing any of Hailey's urinary problems but i am so anxious about the full general anaesthetic, my nerves are shot.

Only one of us can go down to the MRI room, so i am going to do it the nurse has warned me that when she is given the anaesthetic she may flail about with her arms and legs and her eyes will probably roll in her head, i think it will be upsetting to look at but as long as i hold it together and am calm till she is asleep. the MRI should then take about 40 minutes and then its a case of waiting for her to get to recovery and all going to plan she can go home that night.

I'm not religious but i reckon if any of you are could you send prayers or positive thoughts her way on Tuesday as i just feel she could do with as many nice thoughts as possible xx

Hi haileysmum, when my little guy was one he had a general anesthetic, it was following an accident so I didn't have time to think about and start worrying about the anesthetic, but I can say it was fine, he just drifted off to sleep, no flailing that I can remember but it was a bit emotional I have to admit. That said the nurses obviously know that this is a stressful few moments for the mum and they employed their usual distraction technique of asking you lots of questions. Worked on me! As for sending positive vibes, absolutely, bucket loads! And delighted she got the cancellation.

Watching your child be put to sleep can be very upsetting so prepare yourself and stay strong while she can see you. Hold her hand and tell her its going to be ok and then, when she is asleep, you can have a wobbly moment.

When our son had surgery a few years ago I found him being put asleep very upsetting but I kept it together for him and then as soon as he was gone and I was out of the room, I cried my eyes out!

Fingers crossed all will go well and she will be fine. Hopefully, she won't remember a thing and she will be ok.

Stay strong and let us know how she gets on, I will say a little prayer for her (and one for you as well!)

Thanks Ladies, i have to say i am really anxious so much so that my IBS has flared up really badly.I am very good at pretending to be calm so i reckon i should be able to hold it together for her,

The main thing will be that she has to fast from tonight and she has a really big appetite so i know that she is going to be hounding me for food/drink in the am- i have explained that her belly has to be empty so the Dr can see everything but i reckon she will be a cranky thing with no brekkie in her belly, i gave her favourite dinner tonight a big helping and even a mince pie for afterwards!.

Thanks for all your positive thoughts, ill let you know how she gets on x

Hailey did very well yesterday, she was a model patient. I felt like a basket case, i was awake since 3am, had to get up at 6am to be in the hospital for 730 but i was wide awake with all sorts of thoughts going through my head.

it was quite upsetting watching her be put under anaesthetic but i held it together until she was asleep then i had a few tears. It felt like she would never get back to us in the ward as they said she would be 1 hour but it was 1 hour 40 minutes which felt like forever. when she came up to the ward she was asleep for another 20 minutes or so, she was given 7up to sip on when she woke up and then cereal, then we had to walk about the ward with her to make sure she wasn't too disorientated, we got to leave about an hour after she woke up, we just lounged about for the afternoon and watched a movie.

so now it is a case of waiting to hear what the results of the scan showed. i will ring the consultant early next week if i haven't heard anything.fingers crossed all will be ok.

So glad its over, how is she today?

Fingers crossed for good results next week.

Its so upsetting seeing them be put to sleep but I think, worse for us than them really. No wonder you had a few tears, its only natural. I had a little cry after my son was put to sleep for an op a few years ago myself.

I thought she was going in Thursday (my brain is not working right since I had my op a few weeks ago I think!!)

Anyway, great its over and that she is ok.

let us know when you get the results.

Not a bother on her today, as bright as a button. the only thing is the tape from keeping her airway tube in while under the anaesthetic have left 2 large marks on her jaw line and she has a needle mark in her hand- apart from that you wouldn't even know anything happened to her- resilient little things kids.

Oh how bloody annoying. You must be so frustrated and stressed. I'd try emailing them also and explain how worried you, can't sleep etc. Might just tug at some ones heart strings enough to be able to squeeze you in for an appointment or even a bloody phone call. It seems you really have to fight your corner in our healthier system. Hope you get news soon.

Finally got a hold of Dr. thankfully the sacral dimple isn't affecting her spine. She did say there is more fluid in her spinal column in the thoracic area but its not a marked enough of an increase to be worried about so its a big relief that we don't have any further problems to deal with.

Surely they could have just called you and told you that sooner. Its a bloody nightmare getting through to hospitals at this time of year (or any time of year for that matter!!)

Glad she is ok, that's great news.

A letter from the consultant arrived that was sent to Haileys GP and Cc'd to us and it mentions Hailey having a "small thoracic Syrinx" now of course i had to google it and it is relating to the extra fluid in her thoracic spine but its a cyst in her spine and can cause numerous problems- im going to ring her GP this week and see what she thinks but it seems odd for there to be a cyst in her spine- anyone else heard of this??....
