I brought Hailey to the Dr recently as 14 months into toilet training on a bad day she can still have 3-5 accidents. We had a big talk and she told me that she doesn't know/ or feel her wee coming out and that when she coughs/ sneezes wee comes out- needless to say i thought that was a worrying thing for a 4 year old to say, so got the ball rolling with GP appointment to get referral letter for a Urologist.I rang the urologists receptionist to be told its a 18 month waiting list publicly as Dr only does 2 clinics a month and he only sees adults privately.

She told me to go back to my GP and get another letter asking for an ultrasound of her kidneys & bladder so that has been sent into hosp now and should be a 4-8 week wait on that, she then said that if something shows up on ultrasound results will be sent to hospital urologist and that could flag her being seen earlier.

I just really want this to be sorted out for Hailey especially with starting school in September.

Has anyone had any dealing with a a Urologist? ....or any experience of toliet training taking a particularly long time?

Call the receptionist every few days and ask about cancellations. I hate to say it but if you annoy them, they'll get you seen so you stop annoying them

When our son had a series of infections in his willy when he was small, we were told he would need surgery to sort it out (kind of like a circumcision) and that we'd be waiting 18 months. So I called the receptionist every week asking about cancellations and amazingly an appointment became available and he was sorted within about 4-5 months for the surgery.

I feel bad even suggesting this to you but in my experience our health system is in tatters and only those who make the most noise get seen quickly.

I'm sorry but that's how we dealt with it unfortunately.

Its shocking that a child can be left with this problem that long. Its a sad state of affairs. Poor Hailey :(

I have done the same with trying to see Respiratory and skin specialists in the past getting waiting times down from over a year to 3- 6 months so i will start to get very friendly with his receptionist!.

I need to wait till we get the ultrasound done before i start the calling as if she is then diagnosed with a problem then i will have something to go on and she wont be just seen as a routine patient it will be more urgent.

Haileys own GP has just rung me to say that the urine sample i dropped down this am has showed up infection (she did a dipstick test on it) and she needs to start on an antibiotic she said she wont get the lab results (on the sample that shes sending away) till the end of the week but to start on antibiotics today.

Hailey had her renal ultrasound today- it was a complete disaster even though we had prepared her as best we could saying she needed to lie still like a statue and jelly would be rubbed on her belly and we promised treats and a prize for being a good patient....well as soon as we went into the room she started bawling crying and clinging to me, refused to lie on the bed- kicked and thrashed around, we had to practically restrain her.it was so fecking stressful and upsetting. Dr didnt manage to get great pictures but he thinks her kidneys look structurally sound.

I explained that we have the referral letter in with the urologist since jan- he said that the urologist is retiring in july and doesnt think he will be seeing anymore patients so we should try and get on the nephrologists waiting list instead- the whole thing is so frustrating.

Hailey on average has 3- 4 accidents a day on a bad day she can have up to 7- with school starting in sept, i really would like this sorted out for her before then but god only knows if she will even have seen anyone by then.

She didnt seem to have any left over upset the next day- she said ill do the jelly on my belly the next time!

Im just so annoyed that i have to start again with another department in the hospital and get bumped to the bottom of the list when we should have been over 4 months on their list already if they had jsut informed me the urology guy was retiring. im going to be making friends with the receptionist in the nephrology dept now!- weekly calls is the only way to go i think to get her seen sooner.

Our health system is a disgrace. we have no government, Leo Varadkar is making jokes about cleaning his election posters for another election while we have the highest number of people on trollies....

its a disgrace, I am so sorry she has to through this. hope she gets sorted soon.

makes me so angry the way people who need to be treated and looked after are pushed to the back of lists like this.

glad she was ok the next day though, little trouper. x

Im literally going to scream the house down, i got a hold of the urologists secretary today only to be told they had NEVER received Hailey referral that we sent in Jan- so she is on NO waiting list- i nearly cried on the phone the stress of it all. so we are going to have to start all over again. i am going to get my GP to write the most dramatic referral letter ever written to try and get her seen asap

I wrote in a letter to the hospital attaching a copy of the missing referral from Jan & got my Dr to write another more up to date referral and today someone from the hospital rang me from the risk assessment department- so they must think they messed up by not putting Hailey on the waiting list and now this very nice lady is making sure that all the right people see the referrals so hopefully we shall get an appointment for her before too long- fingers crossed

the latest is that they will see her in November- the risk assessment dept told me to get my GP to write another referral marked urgent to see if we can get her seen sooner than that.My GP said that she will do it but she doesn't know if it will do any good as if the Consultant has already considered it as a routine apt she probably wont change her mind- pretty frustrated as on a good day Hailey has 3 accidents a bad day can be 8 or 9 accidents- I feel really tied to the house with her due to needing to be close to a toilet

oh haileysmum that's such a shame - suppose all you can do is keep ringing to see if there's a cancellation and fingers crossed she's seen sooner than November - xo

This is the link to complain to HSE online, this may help?

That's so annoying, I would be livid if that was happening to my child. The incompetence and disorganization in the HSE is astonishing to me.

I have been having loads of issues with them too for my knee and that's nowhere near as bad as what you're going through and it has me driven demented.

I got so fed up after my last visit, when I could hear 2 doctors talking about me in the next room and agreeing to fob me off with physio instead of investigating the pain any further - that I contacted my local TD and asked her for help. She has been really helpful and sent me the link http://www.hse.ie/eng/services/yourheal ... nts/HowTo/ to write a complaint online to HSE. Within 2 days of this, I had 2 phonecalls from the hospital to 'get to the bottom' of it.

Now, I have an appointment for next week to see the senior consultant in Navan and while I am not overly hopeful he'll have an actual solution in mind for me, I am relieved I am getting to see someone in a senior position who may be able to help me.

Our taxes pay for our Health Service - and by God do we pay alot of tax - so if you are frustrated, its best to complain because at least then, someone will listen to you and try to help.

I hope Hailey is doing ok - at least August is not too far away. Hopefully she'll get sorted then.

Poor little mite - its so unfair on her and you guys too that you have been treated so shabbily and for so long.

So finally got to see specialist - but the whole thing was a let down, i thought they would do some sort of tests but apart from doing her height, weight, urine sample and blood pressure that was the height of it. The Dr was really blase about the whole thing saying " there are 7 and 8 year olds i treat with this problem" - like it was no big deal to have a nearly 5 year old having urinary accidents 3-10 times a day. i felt like pulling my hair out or crying- i really thought we would get some kind of answers or some medication to help her bladder control but nothing- we were told to increase her fluids to 1 litre a day and to come back for an ultrasound in 5 months and an appointment to see her in 6 months.

I am really anxious about her starting school and i know kids can be cruel and i have a real fear that the kids are going to tease her and call her names when they end up seeing wet patches, also in creche the minders would give her a hand changing herself but i know that this is a no go area with teachers, i am really worried for her and i dont know what else to do to help her

oh gosh haileysmam i really don't know what to say but i can hear the frustration and worry in your post

i know it mighht sound cruel but i'd ask the creche to let hailey do more on her own in preparaiton for sept - obviously step in if she's struggling but help her learn to do herself poor mite

I really understand your frustration and lack of support and care.
I would use to avoid any visible accident in school, some pull ups nappies or something similar.

Sorry to hear they do not care about A at all.

Oh haileysmum. How bloody frustrating and upsetting for you and your little lady. If you haven't already, can you speak to the school before she starts to see what support they can provide. Don't know if there are more than one junior infants class in her school but if there are maybe the school would make sure she is in a class where there is a child who requires an sna so that there could be an extra person at hand to discretely offer support. I have heard of students availing of support from sna s who were not formally assigned to them. Could be a long shot but I would definitely be looking for some ideas from the school also, they may have had experience of this before.

There is no one in her school till next week, i have sent an email to the secretary to see if i can get teachers email address or speak to her before the 1st day of school. i really don't know what to do- i mean would she get more teasing for wearing a pull up or if she had pants on and had accidents?-

what would you mums do in my situation pull ups or just send her in with loads of changes of clothes?.

the thing is with having been told by the consultant to up her water intake to 1 litre a day we have now gone from an average of 3 accidents a day to 12 yesterday- i actually ended up in tears as i ran out of pants for her, im just so frustrated, fed up and sad about the whole situation

oh god love her - and you
I don't know what to suggest
wonder why the consultant said more fluids - did he say what he's reasons where?
Will Hailey wear the pull ups - they can be discreet but it's so upsetting for her I can imagine - hopefully you get an understanding teacher who's willing to help if they can
